What to do this summer, as inspired by locally shot movies and TV shows

It’s summer – officially, finally –  and the time when Manitobans really shine. We make the most of our warmest season like no other! Whether you’re looking for something rustic and low key, or something metropolitan and chic, we’ve got some ideas for your Manitoba staycation.

And of course, we’ve used some locally filmed movies as inspiration for our list:

1. Birds Hill Park

The Long Walk (available on STARZ) shot across the province, including Birds Hill Park. Enjoy a hiking and beach day, just 30 minutes north of Winnipeg. Also shot in Birds Hill Park: Tales From the Loop, and Flag Day (both available on Prime).

2. Winnipeg Beach and Lilac Resort

Set in the fictional town of Plummerville, USA, the film Nobody 2 filmed in Winnipeg Beach and Lilac Resort, 20 minutes east of Winnipeg. Experience Manitoba cottage country in Winnipeg Beach or do some camping and water sliding at Lilac Resort. Check out Nobody 2 now, on Amazon Prime.

3. Fort Garry Hotel

Stay in the city, and get fancy, at the Fort Garry Hotel. Inspired by Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice (available on Disney +), you could see live music, have a stellar meal or get pampered at Ten Spa.

4. Rustic camping experience

Leave the cell phone behind, ditch the modern comforts and get rustic – a camping experience inspired by Little House on the Prairie reboot, which will hit Netflix on July 9. Recreate the Little House feeling by camping under the stars.

5. Check out a Sea Bears game

Inspired by the basketball movie Champions (available now on Crave), watch a Sea Bears game at Canada Life Centre, where the film shot. If you haven’t experienced the excitement of the last two minutes of a CEBL game, it’s time you did!

6. Lac du Bonnet

You may not want to recreate the drama or suspense of Hair of the Bear, but you could have a lovely time in its filming location of Lac du Bonnet. Enjoy the lake, go for a hike, play a round of golf, or spend time in the welcoming town. And then check out the film on Crave.

Any other ideas? Email us at info@mbfilmmusic.ca. Tell us your staycation idea inspired by a locally filmed movie, and we may share them on social media!
